making biodiesel from rapeseed - BioDiesel Basics

Is Biodiesel fuel is better than the fossil fuels, or are there any factors we will need to compare them, and are we capable of replacing all the fossil fuel demands, these are all great questions. There has been much talk of biofuels and in particular biodiesel being touted as a more carbon friendly alternative to traditional petroleum based fuel.

The process of homemade biodiesel production is similar to making soap. And bio-diesel fuel can be domestically grown, eliminating our dependence on foreign oil. An engine that runs on biodiesel is much healthier so the saving is not just by the biodiesel cost compared to petrodiesel but by the maintenance costs.

In cold place weather, water freezes to form ice crystals which accelerate the gelling of the residual fuel. Biodiesel also provides considerably fewer combustion emissions when compared to petroleum-based diesel fuel. Despite its wondrous properties, there are still few companies that directly sell biodiesel.

Diesel engines were in fact originally designed in the early 1900's to run on biodiesel made from oil seed crops and not to run on petroleum-based diesel. Developing a dependence on traditional first generation biocrops may result in food competing with fuel over the use of land.
